Parish Council Elections - 2nd May 2019


The following is a summary of the key dates and process to be followed in connection with the election of 14 Parish Councillors to  Bersted Parish Council. If contested, the election will take place on the 2nd May 2019.

Notice of Election - to be published 18 March 2019

Tuesday 19th March 2019

1st date to deliver nomination papers to the Returning Officer at Arun District Council - Nominations must be delivered by hand within normal office hours

Wednesday 3rd April 2019

Not later than 4pm - Deadline for the delivery of nomination papers to the Returning Officer at Arun District Council

Not later than 4pm Deadline for withdrawals of nomination 

Not later than 4pm - Deadline for Appointment of Election Agents

Publication of Notice of Election Agents

Publication of 1st interim Notice of Alteration to Register of Electors

Thursday 4th April 2019

Statement of Persons Nominated published

Declaration of Uncontested Elections - published 4 April (only for uncontested parishes/parish wards)

Not later than 5pm - Deadline for new applications to vote by proxy (except for emergencies)

Friday 12th April 2019

Deadline for registration applications to vote in the election

Monday 15 April 2019

Not later than 5pm - Deadline for requests for new postal votes or to change or cancel an existing postal vote or proxy appointment

Wednesday 24th April 2019

Notice of Poll and Polling Stations to be published

Declarations of Result of Poll - to be published on 3 May 2019 once the result has been declared at the counting of the votes – elected Councillors will take up their positions formally on the 7th May 2019



Candidates and Agents briefings

Arun District Council (ADC) will be holding 3 candidates and agents briefings in February. The first will take place on Tuesday 26 February at the Civic Centre in Littlehampton at 6pm. The candidates and agents briefing by ADC will be open to everyone. This will provide information and guidance on what to expect throughout the election period and nomination packs will be available.

There will be another candidates and agents briefing by ADC on Wednesday 27 February at 4pm at Bognor Regis Library, London Road and 6pm at Bognor Regis Town Hall, Clarence Road. At the candidates and agents briefing ADC will also give a brief overview of how the verification and count will be conducted.


The nominations period will run from Tuesday 19 March until 4pm on Wednesday 3 April 2019. Informal appointments will be available between 10am and 4pm (but not between 1 and 2pm) throughout this period for Arun Elections staff to check the nomination papers completed and advise of any amendments that need to be made. Please be aware that ADC are not permitted to make any amendments on the candidates behalf and they or a representative of theirs will need to complete these themselves. We suggest that you do not submit nominations on the afternoon of 3 April as there may not be time to make any necessary amendments before the statutory deadline of 4pm.
