Being a CAREGiver with Home Instead Senior Care

Julie Nicholas recently started working part time as a CAREGiver for Home Instead Senior Care in Bognor Regis, supporting elderly people to remain independent in their own homes. We asked her about her experience and what she would tell others considering working in home care.

What made you want to work in care?

“Whilst still at school I worked in a nursing home taking suppers to residents. I realised I really enjoyed helping people and it taught me a lot.
A few years and jobs later I went to work for West Sussex County Council as a Home Care Assistant. The work was very varied and different from working in a Residential setting. I got a great deal of satisfaction working with people in their own homes and became a huge fan of this way of caring.”

What made you want to join Home Instead?

“I was looking for a part time care role, but wanted to find a company that would offer their customers and care workers the continuity that is so often lacking in domiciliary care. I searched on the web and found that Home Instead had received very high praise and reviews from their staff as well as customers.
Home Instead differs from other care providers that I have worked for in the way they put the person at the centre of the care package, there is no rushing in and out, time is given to deliver an unhurried visit to the person, which allows me to get to know the person properly and them me. Because of this, I have been able to take people out and give a more personal visit and build up a trusting relationship which helps the person talk about any worries that they may have and help to alleviate anxieties.”

What’s been positive about your experience so far?

“I hope to achieve for myself a good work and life balance and still be able to give my clients the best I can. I only work with a small number of customers, and seeing the results you can achieve this way is really satisfying.”
